Curriculum

Date of birth: December 10, 1960

Paolo Colombo is a full professor of Materials Science and Technology at the University of Padova, Department of Industrial Engineering, Padova, Italy. He graduated Summa cum Laude in Chemical Engineering from the University of Padova in 1985, and in 1987 obtained a diploma after a specialization course in Glass Engineering from the University of Padova. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the Pennsylvania State University (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) in 1991. He was an assistant professor at the University of Padova from 1990 to 1998 and then an associate professor at the University of Bologna, from 1998 until 2005. He is also an adjunct professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of University College London, UK.

Educational activity
He teaches in the following courses (School of Engineering, University of Padova):

- Chemistry and Applied Chemistry (Civil Engineering, 1st level, BSc degree)

- Glass Science and Technology (Materials Engineering, 2nd level, MSc degree)

Main Research Topics
Paolo Colombo's research interests include novel processing routes to porous glasses and ceramics, the development of ceramic components from preceramic polymers and the vitrification and reuse of hazardous industrial and natural waste. In particular, special emphasis on the following areas of research:

- Automated Manufacturing of ceramic scaffolds using Direct 3D Printing

- Development of porous ceramics from preceramic polymers and geopolymers

- Engineering design and applications of porous ceramics

Memberships and Appointments
He is the head of the PhD school in Industrial Engineering at the University of Padova, a member of the World Academy of Ceramics, and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College. He was elected Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2010) and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (2011). He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the Pennsylvania State University in 1991, the 2007 Pfeil Award (The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, London, UK), the 2010 Global Star Award (The Engineering Ceramics Division of the American Ceramic Society), the 2011 Edward C. Henry Award (The Electronics Division of The American Ceramic Society) and the 2013 Verulam Medal & Prize (The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, London, UK). He is in the editorial board of 14 international scientific journals, and has co-organized several international conferences and has given numerous invited talks in the field of porous ceramics and polymer-derived-ceramics, and he has been the guest editor for special issues devoted to those topics. He has published more than 170 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 7 book chapters and holds 4 international patents. He is co-editor of a book on cellular ceramics, a book on polymer-derived-ceramics and 8 proceedings books.
