Date of birth: October 04, 1942 Bernhard Schrefler is professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Padova and Secretary General of the International Centre for Mechanical Science (CISM) at Udine. Obtained a Ph.D. and D.Sc. at the University of Wales. He published over three hundreads papers, five textbooks and fifteen edited texts. The text "The Finite Element Method in the Static and Dynamic Deformation and Consolidation of Porous Media" is an accepted state-of-the-art book. He server on the Editorial Board of many academic journals. Active within European Community R & D and training initiatives. Within the sixth framework programme he takes part in MAECENAS, UPTUN, IALAD, KMM-NoE, RAMWASS, a MARIE CURIE Programme and in a EURATOM/CNR-ENEA contract on thermo-mechanical problems in superconducting coils for ITER. Further he is involved in a SOCRATES contract with Poland. Research interests are in the following areas: Environmental Geomechanics, Soil Science and Reservoir Engineering, Structural-and Materials Engineering, Fusion Technology.
