Date of birth: October 04, 1942 Bernhard Schrefler is professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Padova and Secretary General of the International Centre for Mechanical Science (CISM) at Udine. Obtained a Ph.D. and D.Sc. at the University of Wales. He published over two hundreds papers in refereed journal, five textbooks and twentythree edited texts. The text "The Finite Element Method in the Static and Dynamic Deformation and Consolidation of Porous Media" is an accepted state-of-the-art book. He serves on the Editorial Board of many academic journals. Active within European Community R & D and training initiatives. Within the sixth framework programme he took part in MAECENAS, UPTUN, IALAD, KMM-NoE, RAMWASS, a MARIE CURIE Programme and in a EURATOM/CNR-ENEA contract on thermo-mechanical problems in superconducting coils for ITER. Within FP seven he is involved in INVINN and Marie Curie Programme MUMOLADE, further he takes part in a SOCRATES contract with Poland. Research interests are in the following areas: Environmental Geomechanics, Soil Science and Reservoir Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Structural-and Materials Engineering, Fusion Technology.
